Rear axle bearing replacement?

There was a lot of play in my rear end when I shook it back and forth, so I assumed the bearings were shot. The axle and right side bearings were easy to remove, but how do you remove the left side bearings? Do you have to remove the rear differential to get to them? If so, do you have to reset the ring and pinion? If that's the case, I may let a mechanic deal with that.
 
A bearing puller made quick work of it. I pressed the new ones in a couple of months ago and everything works great.
