Need help with front differential

Last night I was replacing the clutches and springs in my detroit gearless locker and I have a little problem. There are 2 shims that are different thickness. I am pretty sure they set the spacing on the ring gear and pinion. Is there any easy way to figure out which one goes on which side without putting that paint stuff on the gears and putting it all together. It is off a 04 Wolverine if that helps (I thought maybe the thick one goes on a certain side or something like that. Any help would be appreciated.
