How to remove surface rust on my 2001 Wolverine

My 2001 350 4x4 Wolverine spent some of its life on the Gulf Coast and due to high salt area some of my exposed steel lines on the engine have slight "surface" rust. Would muratic acid - a light coat - then flush with lots of water be a good way to remove the surface rust? Is there a better chemical to use?

I thought muratic acid is for cleaning concrete and brick?

It is in addition to rusty tools and will eat alumin. alive. Solved my problem....found some navel jelly and it cleaned up my surface rust problem and it also etches the metal.
