I run a K&N with and outterwear. The filter debate could rage on forever. I think the most important thing, is regardless of what filter you end up with, keep it clean and oiled.
 
ditto that. No matter what filter, follow the manufacturer's directions. Oilling is especially important on gauze filters as it's the oil that traps the smaller particles of dust and debris. Without it, you'll be rebuilding the top end in no time.
 
I swear by Uni-Filters. Filter better than a K&N.

I honestly cannot tell any power difference between K&N or Uni.
