Stupid question but what's the advantage to swapping the stock shifter out to the yz direct shifter?

It removes the linkage setup, which in my case was completely worn out. Mine had about an inch of play up and down while shifting. That and the raptor clutch cable setup were the cheapest and best things i've done to the bike. It's well worth your time to do it.

So it's just a yz450f shifter? Any certain year? And it just bolts right onto where the linkage connects?

I believe most use a yz250f, not 450f. Not sure if it's the same, but I know that the yz250f works 100%. I believe any year works. Mine is an Emgo brand shift lever from ebay. No there not a pain at all but heres a better one for a couple dollars more its the same one I have and love it!
