Should I be getting a ohm reading off my spark plug cap? I dont have any spark at the plug when grounded. The ign. coil at the primary and secondary was within the parameters... and the stator is new.

what does the stator read?? and what kind of quad.. im going through the same ordeal. i just got jew outta 130 bux and was sold a worrior stator instead of a raptor stator and sice its electical i cannot return it so no i have a burnt up raptor stator and a 98 worrior stator...

5 k ohms. So somewhere in that range is ok. They use a resistor in the cap to supress RF noise.

If its supposed to read 5, i guess mine is shot. I found one on ebay new for 40 bucks with the coil... not a bad price concidering Yamaha wants 25 for the oem cap alone. I hope this will get it running. thanks (its a 97 Warrior by the way)

Just the cap it-self which can be unscrewed... not sure if you know that or not? What reading did you get? Also I've found that many places sell just the cap for pretty cheap. Which is a NGK 45 degree non-termail on plug end type.
I've never seen a cap good bad!
Just to test you can ground the high tension lead off of the coil to ground or close to ground and see if you get spark... if the spark jumps the gap. That will tell you if it's the cap or not.

Damn it I was wrong.. It has a 10 K ohm cap not a 5. Sorry I went off of NGK's web site not yamaha's tech manual.

I tested the cap itself with my multimeter and got no reading at all. I put the + to the screw on the top and the - to the bottom connector lead on the inside?? I dont know if this was the correct way to pull a reading, but I was trying to follow the manual. As for the tension lead test... Ill look into that this w/e, but i do have a new coil and cap on the way. I really hope this is the fix... ive put a lot of time into this quad and im ready to ride! Thanks

You should have resistance on the cap.. if you do have OL or OFL or something like that then for sure the cap is bad.

Ok, I have 687k on the source & 500k on the pickup. I know the book can be off, but by how much? ...I saw your other posts and i think this is the issue. Thanks for the help

do you have a warrior or a raptor? From my findings is that they give you that wide of a spread on those coil of wires to adjust for coil turns, temp, wear.. They all have a little variance. As long as it's with in spec then you are ok. I'm not sure of the machine so I can't tell you for sure.
Most of the time if you have spark and the cam timing is ok, you have fuel.. etc, it's the pickup coil's or CDI box.
It's odd to me though that they are both off.

Mines a 98. I'm pretty sure that the stator assembly did not change nor flywheel or CDI between these two years.
I'm going to guess that you have something wrong with the pickup coils. I'm really suprised though they both are bad?? Make sure and check you meter leads by touching them together and seeing what the meter reads. Without touching the leads with your hands. Then take that measurement into account.

I'll have to check into the part numbers.. to see if there any different.
Also I believe ricky sells just the pickup coils for much cheaper then buying the whole unit. I'll have to do some looking around. I'll get back to you.

Well, so happens the ign coil i ordered has a 5 ohm cap! could this be a reason i cant start? its brand new, but not what yamaha says it should be? thanks

I have a 5 ohm NGK racing cap on my bike and runs great.
Here are the spec's for the coils from ricky's.
