I have a shifter from a 450. Its about 1.5 - 2 inches longer than stock and it does clear the side of the case, even when it is set up for riding boots.

same problem with mine last fall... Its most likely your main jet, like hatfield said. (I would replace it if i were you.)

...also, get the specs from the book for the gap and make sure the feeler guage set you buy has the right one. I had 6 sets of feelers and only 1 had the right guage.
