welding on cases?possible?

i was wondering if welding on the cases is possible because my father was gonna try and weld the piece that broke off the case from a chain breaking,and also on another case we have, the slot that holds one of the timing chain guides has a chip in it and doesnt hold the guide snug and we were gonna try and weld a little patch on it so it wont let the guide fall out of place when its all put together...i must mention my dads a diesel mechanic and is a shop foreman at a shop,he's ben welding all his life and is one of the best welders i have ever seen,he used to have a full time job just welding and we have all the types of welders at the shop,tig,mig,arc anything you can name we have so was just wondering if any1 know ahead of time b4 we try it next week...thx
