Valve adjustment problem!!! Help!

I decided to adjust my valves for the first time and I checked them and they were a little off. So I adjusted them but when I have everything back together I turned it over and it ticked LOUD. So... I tried again with no success. I have no idea what to do. I used the Clymer book measurements but it still ticks! PLEASE HELP
