Timing chain

When you take the motor apart to put a new piston and gaskets do you have to put a new timing chain on. Everybody ive talked to says if I don't within 6 weeks ill be tearing it apart again too put a new one in

It's usually a good idea to at least check it, but you don't necessarily have to replace it.

If you have it apart put a new one in.
