Someone is selling me a 2004 yfz 450 with a big bore and alot of extras for $1000...the thing is the transmission gave out.is this something that would be worth buying? Around about how much is a tranny rebuild at a shop?

if you can take the engine out yourself and bring it in all prepped it shouldn't cost much in labour.

If the rest of the bike in is good to very good condition, **** yeah!!! Most all YFZs are selling for $2500-$3000. I'd see if he would go lower. Never hurts to try to get it cheaper. Especially if you price out everything and get a baseline for the cost of parts. Also, depending on what happened to the trans exactly, there could be cases damaged.

Yeah he agreed to sell it to me for 800. So if will be picking it up tomorrow. If will do a full inspection on the case. But anyways this is her. It will be a project for me. I'll might consider selling my warrior wayy down the line.

Go for it. Trans is an easy rebuild if that's the problem. Could just be clutch probs or something else, but well worth $800. I paid $3000 for my '06. If you do have to redo the trans, you can also do the oil upgrade at the same time along with the water pump rebuild. Welcome to the YFZ world.

Yeah I'm going to have fun with it. And a learning experience. I like the fenders on yours. Wish these were blue. I'm going to join the yfz forum and check out all possible upgrades. Is pulling the motor out hard to do on these? I know very little about them and wish to know more.

Thanks. The motors pull pretty much the same as a warrior except for the obvious water hoses. Don't expect a lot from YFZcentral as they are kinda cliqueish., but use the search and you can find a lot of info. I can help as much as I can. You can always pm me.

I didn't get it guys. Case had a huge crack. They welded it but it still leaked oil. Body was in OK condition. Turned on after like 20 turns. When it turned on you could hear the valves really bad. I'll save the 800 and a headache for something better.

Hmm... For 800, looking that good, I may have gone for it. Not like the top end won't be apart anyway. When doing a complete rebuild, I have the head ported and rebuilt anyway. The case can probably be had reasonably priced, since there are so many of them out there.

yep thats a steal at $800
motor is not that much different than my lt z400 and I got that with the left side case busted wide open $300 later I had a new case half and rebuilt the top end and back together in a couple days and running like new
I would have loved to tackle that yfz

Well he called me back. He needed money a.s.a.p. He sold it to me last night for $700. I'm taking it apart next weekend.ill keep you guys posted.

Holy crap. Incredibly lucky and I'm incredibly jealous

Lol nah I think I'll keep it for now. I want to learn more about them. Hopefully she will be running in the next couple of months.

Yeah due to work I don't have time for that....wife and daughter don't allow that either. It's a project wanna do it right and get it to bare frame to power coat and fix the case, transmission and valves.
