engine blowing smoke

Blew an engine-sleeve, piston and rod ----bought another engine

Ok, so the seller said it was smoking and burning a half a qt per ride. What are common causes for this? I am planning on pulling apart the topend, but looking for direction. I have already checked the timing chain and it is flopping free. What is more likely -rings or valve guides? I am pretty sure my old head is still good, but that engine was burning a bit of oil also.

Damn half a quart? That is a lot! Plan on boring up a size and getting a piston kit as well... While your at it change the valve seals.
