I bought a 1996 Warrior and took it the Yamaha dealership; the tech told me the CDI was bad so I bought one from RMSTRATOR. I put in the CDI and hooked up the battery. It will turn over but not fire up. After about 10 attempts starting it, I hear “pop.. pop.. fizzle” and a small amount of smoke came from the CDI. I turned off the ignition and disconnected the battery.
Any ideas?
Last thing I want to do is pay the $90 an hour to Yamaha again?

I just found the MORON I bought the warrior from wrapped some tinfoil around the main fuse and put in back in. I hope I did not just burn out my new CDI.

Update - replaced the main fuse, attempted to start it again, 3 trys but did not start. I will post a video ASAP.

Update - I have no spark. I removed the spark plug, plugged it back into the spark plug wire and held it against the engine but no spark could be seen. I also tried against the frame.

I assume this means my CDI is toast?

I bet you did fry that CDI. Hard running the fuse like that is no good. Either the CDI or regulator went out. You can test your coil and stator to see if they are in spec. Drop in your old CDI and check your stator and coil to see if the issue was with them to begin with.

From my research it does not seem the main fuse has anything to do with the CDI.

The CDI takes the 12v from the battery and steps the voltage up to around 400volts. Then sends it to the charging circuit to charge the main capacitor. Once the triggering circuit receives the triggering signal from the stator, the triggering circuit temporarily stops the charging circuit, allowing the capacitor to discharge it's stored energy very rapidly to the ignition coil.

Then what are the "usual suspects" when a CDI crackels, sizzles, and smokes?

Does the strator or ignition coil send electricity back through the CDI?

If the ignition coil is bad will that and the stored electricity has no where to go would that fry the CDI?
