It should be checked once in a while.. maybe every season. (pulling the tensioner out of the head to make sure it is not all the way out) The tensioner adjusts automatically to chain strech by spring tension and a locking paw.

You tell if it's "all the way out"

By removing the 12mm bolt and spring then removing the cam chain tensioner (by removing the 2 -8mm bolts) and see if it's adjusted out all the way. If it is then it's time to replace the timing chain?

Thanks

The tensioner has a ratcheting type system in it. There are two mounting bolts and a larger center bolt. To check the tension, unbolt the large center bolt, releasing and removing the spring. Then undue the two mounting bolts and carefully pull the tensioner out. You can now check to see how far out the tensioner rod is pushed out. If the push rod is maxed out, you will need to replace the timing chain. To re-install, push the tensioner push rod back in all the way (you will need to release the ratchet system). Then bolt the tensioner back on without the spring and center bolt installed. Once mounted, install the spring and center bolt. Turn the motor over by hand and you will hear the tensioner clicking as it tightens. Once it stops clicking, you are ready to ride.
