Exhaust gasket placement

I have an 87 warrior that I got from my mom. I need help with the exhaust gasket that goes where the back half meets the front half. It didn’t have the gasket or anything to stop the exhaust from coming out right there. I have the clamp and the gasket thing. What I want to know is how it actually goes on. I need it to plug the gap since the back half doesn’t slide all the way over the front half. I took some pictures of the exhaust and the gasket type thing.

Usually the gasket will stay in the mid pipe and is supposed to slip right over the header pipe.
