i just went through this pull off the cover oppisite side of your shifter on the shaft trere is like a finger shaped like a boomerang it grabs the pins on the shift drum to switch gears up and down the sring on that maybee broken or stuck if it doesnt grab the pin nothing will happen try that...

when i put in my weisco piston and rings +20 over stock i boared it out and with the weisco piston it had to be .002 beyond that to compensate fo expansion of piston and rings the money is worth it to boar it out it cost me 85.00 and that is high most charge 60.00 but you get what you pay...

well i figured it out the problem with shifting was the arm that shifts the gear forks i call it the shift hub that has the pins that move the forks(only people that have worked on a rebuild would know what i am talking about)well thspring was twisted so it would only grab the pin to up shift...
