could just be old oil burning in your pipe from before rebuild or the.rings havent seated yet. run the quad before tearing into it again.

clean both surfaces good and install and torque to spec. no need for anything else.

You wont see the immediate effects of not running the cooler, but im willing to bet that if and when you have to dig into your motor again you will probably be snapping off some bolts, made brittle by excessive heat. ;)
