not so much. as a general rule 1t in the front is about equal to 2t in the rear. so 13t/42t is about the same as 12t/40t
 
so do i want less in the front and mor in the back or both more...i never understood it
 
so the more in the front the better it is
For bottom end.

Rbod had some of it right though, only the equivalent to one toth on the front is 3 teeth on the rear.
SO a 10 dollar front 12 tooth sprocket is the same as a 40-50 dollar 42-43 tooth sprocket.
 
dude why do you want it to be slower.....get 14/39...thats what i have and i have 20 inch tires and i ride where yu do and i have no problems at all
